Composite materials

3D Innovation has years of experience within composite applications both within the wind turbine and aviation industries. We have an extension knowledge of lightning protection of composite structures either if  the materials consist of carbon or glass fibres.

3D Innovation will be a robust partner to consult related to the right choice of material. We know the process and how it will influence the entire supply chain. We have years of experience in composite failure modes and know how to fix those either in the manufacturing proces or in the design of the composite component.

Fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) is a composite material made of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibres. The fibres are mostly glass, carbon, basalt or aramid. The polymer is usually an epoxy, vinylester or polyester thermosetting plastic. FRP are used in the aerospace, automotive, marine and construction industries.

The advanced composite materials have a number of properties that make them attractive in lot of applications. Among properties includes:

  • High specific strength
  • High specific stiffness
  • Low thermic expansion
  • Vibration damping
  • Large elastic strain
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Low X-ray absoption
  • Eletrical insulation
  • Slow deggradation under fatigue effects
  • Complex shapes

All the properties can not be achieved simultaneously. The Properties depends among other things of what sort of fibers and matrix material that are used and how the fibers are positioned. There must therefore be a material design process for each individual component and application.
